Edge Mini HD 7.85" Review - a bang for your buck!

Mobile computing has been part of our daily lives. From smartphones to tablets, the mobility is the key for a gadget to be a useful for work and play. Office works and business related tasks are far from being conquered by android smartphones and tablets and even Apple's Iphones and Ipads. Laptops and Macbooks still are best options for business, office works and entertainment for both professionals and students.

But who would rather bring laptop with them every time? I got my own a Lenovo Jurassic laptop that I even don't know the product code, which is so heavy that I couldn’t withstand, standing while it’s on my back. And even the battery life can't last for more than half an hour, so how can be a laptop, be a portable desktop?

I used to own an android tablet, and it's good… for games and small apps that won't meet my needs. For I've been a windows user since windows 95 (please never ask my age). But yet, where could I find a companion that I need, everyday, anywhere, anytime.

So I found myself searching for a windows tablet. Since I'm not planning to buy high end laptops because I got two desktops here at home. I need something to provide me that mobility that I need, a tablet that is the best bang for my buck.

I found Edge Mini HD from Lazada which is on sale for only 2,888. that comes with a Lenovo Bluetooth Keyboard. Here are the specs of Edge Mini HD, Light and loaded - for work and play.

      • Intel Bay Trail Entry Z3735F, Quad Core
      • 7.85" IPS High Definition screen - (2048 x 1536 resolution)
      • Capacitive multi-touch up to 5 points
      • Windows 8.1 (Upgradable up to latest Windows 10)
      • 2GB memory & 32GB storage
      • 2MP front & 5MP back camera
      • Wifi and G-Sensor
      • Battery life at 3900mAh
      • Expandable up to 128GB

      BUILD
Edge Mini HD is a fancy 7.85" tablet which is at first you would find cheap because of it's flimsy back case made of plastic. With the logo of Edge at the back and the unit's speaker at the lower part together with the back camera at the right edge of the tablet (like in an Ipad Mini's camera). It's orientation is portrait and you'll find the power button and the volume rocker at the upper part of the right side of the tablet, the micro usb and the mini HDMI ports are on the right most part of the upper side of the tablet, and the headphone jack on the left side. The front camera is in the middle on the upper part of the front of the tablet. It also has the proximity sensor.

It was near the size of an Ipad Mini 1, 2 or 3 but Edge mini HD is wider so Ipad Mini's bumpers are not for this cheap tablet.

      Let's go with the specs:

      CPU
Edge Mini HD is powered by Intel Bay Trail Entry Z3735F which suits Windows Tablets these days. Clocked in 1.33 GHz, Edge Mini HD's quad-core matches up with android tablets in the price range.

      STORAGE AND MEMORY
With the help of 2GB RAM makes performance smooth as if you're using a mid-range laptop. And the 32GB Kingston SD10032 SSD is good enough for the performance of the Windows 8.1 and even what I'm using now is the Windows 10 creators update version 1703. Although I'm thinking something's not right because this is on 64bit processor but it comes with Windows 8.1 Home Single Language which is on 32bit. For a reason I think, that having only 2GB RAM may glitch up the 64bit OS.

      SCREEN
The 2048 x 1536 resolution brings the best experience out of your EDGE Mini HD (as it has HD on it's name) so movies and games are really in our side of reason why we have our EDGE Mini HD in our bucketlist

The capacitive 5 point multi-touch screen is so satisfying. It really does the mobility job with the help of Windows 10's tablet mode, on-screen keyboard and touchpad, you wouldn’t mind bringing along a physical keyboard with you.

But yet, Edge Mini HD comes with a decent Lenovo BKC600 bluetooth keyboard cover for LENOVO YOGA tablet 10 series, it's really not meant for our Edge Mini HD but it does the bluetooth keyboard job well and hassle free. A little review on our Lenovo BKC600 that it's hardware is made of metal, nice format, comfortable and it has a physical touchpad too. It works for weeks without charging it over because it has power modes which it reserves power when not in use even if you're not switching off.

      CAMERA
The 5 megapixel and 2 megapixel back and front cameras respectively are nice and can do the job of simple pictures to be shared, but yet in this world full of selfies or groupies, our EDGE mini HD will be on the least of list. Believe me, you wouldn’t want to return to the era of noisy pictures that are hard to understand because of poor lighting.

      CONNECTIVITY

One of the best things I love the most with this tablet is it's strong WIFI capability. For I believe that every gadget has it's range for connecting to wirelessly, but this EDGE mini HD is a beast that can cut through every other high end unit for it to be connected first in the router (I'm sorry for I'm getting excited while writing this). The Bluetooth capabilities is good for it can connect devices simultaneously. The Gyroscope does it's job, as well as the GPS that will be really helpful if you're an adventurer because Microsoft's Maps are the best ,in my experience of using maps, because of the offline map. That you wouldn’t need to be online for you to use maps as for android users. A point for Windows Fans out there!

      BATTERY
One of the reasons that Edge Mini HD is a little disappointing is because of it's little power capacity of 3900mah for the unit can withstand a straight 3 hours of usage, as for browsing only. So don’t expect much on your tablet's power, bring yourself a power bank to get some juice.

      PROS:
      • Lightweight
      • Bright Display
      • Multiple Point Touch Screen
      • Mini HDMI
      • 2GB RAM
      • Comes with Lenovo Bluetooth keyboard

      CONS:
      • Gets really hot (but as for intel cores, temperature around 60 degrees Celsius is not an issue to be compared to android tablets that burns out in this temperature)
      • 3900 mah battery life for quad-core tablet is small
      • No service center
      • No operation manual on it's box
      • Flimsy casing
      • Cameras
      • Should have been rolled out with Windows 10 for more mobility
      • Should have another micro usb port for Hub purposes, while charging at the same time.

Well I think that explains EDGE MINI HD for questions you can comment down below and I'll be reviewing this EDGE MINI HD regarding it's functionality (Bench, gaming, etc.)

    1. Hi maam gwen, regarding your concern, one of the problems of edge mini hd owners is this one, they have no service center. I'll try to get back to you if makakahanap ako ng makakatulong sa inyo. :)

    3. Hi have yout tried charging it overnight. Just let it plugged in even if there is no sign of charging (charging logo) just leave it plugged in overnight. Then try to boot it up after 8hrs. Then get back here if it's solved :) the main problem of our beloved tablet would be the charging port. Napakahina nya and i think yan lang ang need palitan para umokay yang tablet :)

    4. Power problem. Change lcd or replace harness or batterry. Uninstall app that causes heat may cause malfunction. This problems are similar to hp stream

  2. hello, have we tried to upgrade to Windows 10 OS. If yes, what are the changes so far and how long it took for the upgrade to complete? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh yes actually as I review this edge mini HD, I already upgraded it to W10. And now on windows 10 creator's update which has added more features and mobility, and I think windows 10 i much lighter than w7 and W8 or W8.1. As a Windows tablet, w10 added a feature "tablet mode" which enables you to minimize some of the buttons around your screen as if it were made really for a touchscreen friendly pc. The on screen keyboard and the on screen touchpad is a big help to this handy tablet so you wouldnt mind the Bluetooth keyboard for simple typing tasks like on social media. And also the updates of the windows defender, is what every pc needs for protection. So you wouldnt need any other costly anti viruses.

  3. Hi, I am facing issue with this tablet after updating it to windows 10. When the tablet on sleep mode it was unexpectedly reboot/restart. I tried different methods to fix the issue but it's still present.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ah oo i suffer that kind of issue and even suffer that from other laptop pc's kasi medyo mabigat talaga "matulog" ang mga pc na yan, they call it "hibernate". To preserve energy. I turn off my tablet very often para naman nakakapagpahinga sya. About naman sa ma edit sa bios, yes need mo ng usb keyboard para ma access ang bios by pressing delete at boot up. Be careful sa mga gagalawin sa bios for it may cause unnecessary malfunction to your unit. Tyagain nyo lang. Medyo fragile ang edge mini natin.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Your W8.1 OS let's say would be 8GB while the update needed will take up to 4GB or less, then dadagdag sya ng 8GB ulit na W10 OS while yung W8.1 OS ay i cocompress nya into 4GB kaya ang makukuha lang na capacity ng OS and updates sa 32GB(28GB usable) mo ay 12GB. Kaya you shouldn't worry about updating all you need after update is a clean refresh of OS. Para mas magamit mo 100% clean. Ako after I updated to W10 eh tinanggal ko na din yung W8.1 na backup nya kasi talagang hindi ko gusto ang W8.1 so mas maluwag na ang storage ko 8Gb os then Gb virtual ram and that's.10 GB less sa 28GB na usable capacity. Still got more room for applications and softwares, and also don't forget na may Micro sd card slot ang Edge Mini HD kaya versatile ang tablet na ito :)

    2. Hindi naman po sya nag la lag like if your using google chrome while facebooking. How can i update to Win10 is there any issue if i update to Win10?

      Delete
    3. Smooth ang google chrome and facebook dito I even play L4D dito sa edge in W10 at napakasmooth din ng graphics. Ang prob lang sa W10 eh kapag nasanay ka sa charm (left to right swipe) ng w8.1 pero the tablet mode ng w10 saves it :)

      Delete
    4. How about in wind8 smooth po ba siya if using chrome.

      Delete
    5. Sa ngayon kasi W10 naka focus ang microsoft so yung mga security updates and bug fixes makes the o.s. Smooth as possible. Any further than that eh mag shashutdown na yung unit to protect itself. So konting pahinga lang naman need nyan. Naeencounter ko yung mga ganyang heat kapag naka plug-in ang charger kaya iniiwasan ko nalang gamitin while charging.

  5. Is the Edge Mini worth it? Im planning to buy kase. Diko alam kung maganda ba siya, mabilis?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh yes worth it Ito para sa mga nagtitipid na gusto or need ng isang mobile tablet pc. Napaka portable in size can be held in one hand. Can be used while commuting. And at home while sitting on your favorite sofa. At kayang kaya nya. :)

  7. Hi, When i updated my Edge Mini to Win10 it gets really hot. While in windows8.1 its not that hot actually then i noticed an few lags in my pc tab how do i keep my pc tab fast. Im not comfortable i think win8 is much better than windows 10.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Every gadget will become slow whenever their storage space becomes occupied. Larger files occupying means more files to be read everytime. Mas bibilis siguro po ang edge kapag katapos nyo i update to win10 ay i fresh reset. Factory reset. Yun nga lang mawawala na din yung win 8.1 backup nya so you must decide whether t keep it or not. Sa heat naman po. Lahat naman ng gadgets ay ganyan umiinit kapag mas nag paprocess in the case of intel cores. Then itll shut down kapag di na talaga pwede ang heat nya. Siguro need mo lang sir i reformat ang edge. Then have some little tweaks like bawasan mo yung graphics ng windows screen. Nya. Pero if you'll decide na to keep w8.1 nalang eh ok na rin po iyon. :) pero sa experience ko sa mga pc's ko, i tried w7, w8, w8.1, and w10. W10 is the fastest and most userfriendly. XD

    2. Dont update. Uninstall app that cause too much heat

      Delete
    3. I opened up the back case and i found out that the back case serves as a heat sink of the cpu. So i think that the edge mini hd's heat issue is normal for it is an intel atom processor.

      Delete
  8. If i reformat it it would be more faster, right?

I've been looking for windows 10 drivers for our tablet in a while now yet I cant find one that fits best. I still did not find any that work for the touch, sound and display. More so my display wont even rotate so please if you are kind enough to share all that you have so i wont have a hard time digging the internet for this piece of antique. I actually was able to install windows 10 on it before when it still have the preinstalled windows 8. I never thought it was that hard to find its drivers so I never did back it up. 1. Hi! What OS are you in now? Do you still have the original or did you format it already? Have you deleted any existing partition? If not then you still have the recovery which contains the original windows with the oem apps that are preinstalled with the device which is good. I think you'll need an external mouse and keyboard and micro usb hub to fix it. I'll try on my device when i get home and tell you what you needto do.

    2. Siguro ang necessary prepartions nalang that you can do is, relieve your storage from anything. Sa tingin ko medyo malaking storage ang kakailanganin ng windows 10 as you update. So para hindi mahirapan ang memory ng edgemini, backup important files from edge mini and delete them.
